Plot
Dorothy Gale is a girl from Kansas who lives with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry. Her neighbor Mrs. Gulch hits her dog, Toto, because he was in her garden. Mrs. Gale comes to the farm to take Toto away, but he escapes, and Dorothy runs away from the farm. She meets a fortune teller who tells her that her Auntie Em is sick, and that she needs to go back to the farm. When she gets back to the farm she can't find anyone because they have all gone into the storm cellar because there was a tornado. She sits down in the house and it gets caught in the twister. She looks out the window and sees Mrs. Gulch turn into the wicked witch, and sees other things flying around. The house lands "Somewhere over the Rainbow" in a place called Oz. She is greeted by the Munchkins, and is celebrated as a hero because her house fell on the Wicked Witch of the East. Then she meets the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Good Witch named Glinda. She is given Ruby slippers, and pointed down the Yellow Brick road to go to the great and powerful Oz. On the Yellow Brick Road she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. They encounter many things on the yellow brick road like talking trees, and flowers that make you sleep, but they never stop until they reach the Land of Oz. There they are told that they can't get their wishes unless they get the witch's broomstick. Dorothy is then taken by a group of Flying Monkeys and taken to the Witch's castle. The witch then realizes that she can't take the slippers unless Dorothy isn't alive. The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion come to her rescue and Dorothy melts the Witch, and takes her broomstick. They go back to the Wizard to find out that he is a fake, and is from Kansas too. He gives the scarecrow a diploma, the Lion a Medal of Honor, and the Tin Man a heart. The wizard says he can take Dorothy back in his hot air balloon. The wizard appoints the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion rulers of Oz in his absence. Just as the balloon is about to take off Toto runs after a cat and Dorothy follows him. The wizard leaves without Dorothy because he can't stop the balloon. But Glinda appears and explains that Dorothy has always had the power to get home. Glinda didn't tell her before because Dorothy wouldn't have believed it. Bidding her friends a tearful good-bye, Dorothy taps her heels together three times, repeats "There's no place like home," and the Ruby Slippers take her and Toto back to Kansas. Dorothy then wakes up in a bed in Kansas, and all of the farmhands come to see her. She tells them about Oz and they don't believe her. Mrs. Gulch isn't talked about any more.
